ONLINE ATELIER
THE KAOSS SOUND & SAMPLE SPACE
CREATE SOUND EFFECTS (SFX) + SOUND SAMPLES
This practice is proper to all levels, from five years olds to academic music students.
You can do it on your own, or divide the teamwork: one is the musician and listener, the other the technical engineer delivering also comment to the executing companion.
In a music classroom with plenty of pupils, it's possible that a team of SIX pupils can handle the complex job with one Kaoss Pad:
1. The effect commander (list and number); 2. The micman; 3. The fingerman; 4. The knobman; 5. The observer who describes the set-up, the manipulation and modulating sound effect, and 6. The evaluator who gives feedback (in the beginning: the teacher or a pupil with critical expertise). After a few minutes, the membres of the Kaoss team take other positions etc.
In combination with other tasks (e.g. sampling group), all individuals of the entire group are on stage. The music teacher is the final supervisor.

PREPWORK
With the Kaoss Pad you enter the exciting and funny area of audio effects. First of all, connect your radio or CD player to the stereo LINE IN of the Kaoss Pad. Send the controlled sound to your amplifier, hifi or audio mixer via the stereo AUX of the Kaoss Pad. Or, simply, listen to the result with your headphone.
For more physical and live feedback, put the MIC jack in the MIC input and sit down in front of the microphone, about 15 cm /5 inch distance. When you use a microphone intensively for the first time, we recommand : DON'T KNOCK OR BITE THE MEMBRANE (the vibration element on top of the mic). Mostly, people unfamiliar with a microphone, are common to check out the response of the membrane by knocking with the finger on top of the mic.
STARTING
Hold the INPUT level of the volume knob down as long as possible while making noises and sounds with breath and mounth. Increase the volume very carefully.
Push on FX= effect ON. Each FX has an X parameter and a Y one. Search in the FX control list for the appropriate name of the effect number you like. (e.g. N° 40 Reverb). Rub slowly and softly around in the X-Y area of the pad. In the display there appears a double number, for instance 3.2 or 7.8. 7(=X).8(Y). The effect number 9.9 is the maximum of the X - and Y- parameter. Rubbing and producing a voice sound through the microphone, you can switch between the program numbers, between FX= 1 and FX =50. Write down the numbers of programs that you prefer, and compare your preferences with other companions of your Kaoss team. Or, if you work alone, check out your changed preferences next week.
PRESETS
The presets 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are set-ups of internal fixed X-Y effects. Listen to the different results (and communicate your work with your companion). Look at the display, and compare the indicated program number and X-Y position while singing the sound effect. Enjoy the modulation of your voice while you only rub the pad.
SAMPLING
Go to PRG# 51 or higher. Finally, push the REC switch (Kaoss Pad FX knob) to start and stop the sampling act of your voice input, and than control that sound from the X-Y pad using control numbers between 51 and 60. Listen to your sample while rubbing with your finger over the PAD area. Change the program number till you get the satisfying result.
The maximum sampling time is only 5 seconds. After 5 seconds the sampling function stops: be amazed by how long 5 seconds can capture your melody or rap. If you don't have inspiration, you can count up and down (e.g. riffs like: 88 - 66- 44 - 22 are pretty rhythmical). If you have found the right sequence of words or digits, you can sample it.
